H2uP Tahoe, South Shore’s only IV hydration clinic, is upping its value with updated package offerings. Clients can now get a 20 percent discount on package purchases of 5 treatments or a 30 percent discount on a package purchase of 10 treatments. H2uP Tahoe’s IV hydration treatments range from athletic performance, to wellness and hangover recovery. These packages are available for either the Elevate Wellness Center clinic or concierge clinic service by appointment. Prices differ for each location.

“Awareness of IV hydration is growing as clinics are available in most larger cities and our customer base is reflecting that. We wanted to offer an added benefit for our repeat clients,” said Dr. Targhee Oeveraas, H2uP founder and CEO.

Hangover package choices include the popular “Rally” treatment that includes one liter of fluid and the choice of three medications tailored to the client’s symptoms. Or the more robust “No Judgment” treatment, the ultimate in hangover resuscitation that includes one or two liters of fluids packed with electrolytes, minerals, vitamins and any of the medications H2uP offers to treat the worst hangover symptoms.

Yelp reviews of the “No Judgment” give it high praise.

“It definitely lived up to the hype to cure hangovers,” William F.

“It is highly likely that H2uP is the only reason I walked out of Tahoe in one piece,” Tyler M. “Not only were their services an absolute lifesaver, but they were a blast to hang out with.”

Lake Tahoe’s altitude and dry climate along with events that usually include alcohol, a diuretic, can sometimes come as a surprise to tourists who quickly become dehydrated. In consultation with H2uP’s doctors, clients can receive added medications to their IV treatments that can ease headaches, nausea, and heartburn.

For people just looking for an energy boost or a beauty treatment can look to H2uP’s Energize or Glow treatments that employ Vitamins B and C as well as powerful anti-oxidants that help with cellular regeneration. To make an appointment at Elevate Wellness Center or for an in home concierge treatment customers can book online at www.h2uptahoe.com or call or text 530-675- 4287.

Upping your game with Magnesium

Magnesium is a powerhouse mineral. It’s involved in energy production, cell growth, blood pressure, bone health and the functioning of the heart, nerves and muscles. So, pretty much everything an athlete needs to perform at optimum levels.

What happens when we don’t get enough of it? Muscle cramps and weakness, fatigue, poor blood sugar control, elevated blood pressure and nausea, which all equals out to not feeling your best. Also drinking alcohol does a number on your magnesium level.

What’s the best way to keep your magnesium levels up to par? As with most things it all boils down to what you’re fueling your body with. Eat foods rich in magnesium – whole grains, nuts, beans, seeds, fish, avocados, and the tried and true leafy greens. Popeye was right. Spinach really is a superhero choice.

In a perfect world, we are all getting our daily-recommended requirements and tossing back leafy greens and feasting on perfectly prepared salmon for dinner. Right?

For the times when maybe you had a few too many glasses of wine and work has regulated your meals to take out, and what’s in the fridge right now, bringing your balance back in order may be helped with an IV treatment.

Research has found that IV infusions of magnesium may be more effective than oral or intramuscular treatments for correcting nutrient deficits. H2uP Tahoe’s Recoup treatment can help.

Bachelorette party in South Lake Tahoe

Whether you’re looking for a laid-back bachelorette weekend filled with beach lounging and hiking, or you’ve got the itch to try something new like parasailing before throwing on a sparkly dress and getting a little wild at a club, South Lake Tahoe has got you covered.

Enjoy outdoor recreation, trendy restaurants, relaxing spa experiences, and fun nightlife all while taking in unparalleled views of the largest alpine lake in North America and the beautiful Sierra Nevada mountains.

Stay

There’s a reason the Coachman Hotel has been getting nods from the likes of Vogue and Sunset magazines. The Coachman’s modern-meets-mountain décor has visitors and locals alike frequenting the hotel for weekend getaways or pre-dinner drinks. Guests can also play corn hole, take a dip in the pool and hot tub, or cook s’mores over the fire pit. Pro tip: purchase a bottle of the Coachman’s custom Sauvignon Blanc to give as gifts to your bridesmaids.

Hotel Becket, a newly renovated boutique hotel, is just steps from Heavenly Village and offers bright, airy rooms with rustic touches. The hotel’s restaurant Ten Crows has also been making waves on the South Shore with its Alabama BBQ (think sweet tea fried chicken and grits) and selection of 40 whiskeys and bourbons.
EAT

For a classic steakhouse dinner, make reservations at Friday Station atop Harrah’s Lake Tahoe. In addition to making a mean martini, the restaurant offers gorgeous views of Lake Tahoe. For the best experience, plan your dinner around sunset.

For a relaxed atmosphere, head to Tahoe AleWorX. At this recently opened brewery, you can create your own woodfired pizza with over 30 fresh ingredients while enjoying the self-service brewery. Simply scan your wristband, which is embedded with a chip connected to a credit card, and you can sample the various local beers and wines on tap at your leisure.

In the mood for a margarita? Chimayo Street Grill adds a modern twist to classic Mexican street food (and has a killer happy hour). Ceviche Tostadas, Mahi Mahi Tacos, Burnt Ends Torta — the delicious crispy ends of a BBQ brisket — are just a handful of the favorites that keep people coming back for more.

Drink

Located in MontBleu Resort Casino & Spa, Opal Ultra Lounge is where you go to get your dance on. Call ahead to reserve a table and VIP bottle service, and prepare for a wild night. Added bonus: free admission for ladies until midnight on Fridays and Saturdays.

Not the club-going type of gal? Then how about a pub crawl? Hop aboard Off the Chain’s 15-passenger bike bus to explore Lake Tahoe’s best drinking establishments in style (while burning off all those tacos you hopefully ate at Chimayo).

What’s better than a magic show? A magic show with drinks in hand. The Loft in Heavenly Village is a great place to grab a few cocktails in the lounge before heading into the intimate venue for a captivating magic show, which you may just get to participate in.

Book a private wine-tasting tour with Tahoe Tasting aboard the Golden Rose. The 1953 wooden craft cruises through Emerald Bay while serving up samples of wines from Napa — but also wines grown and produced right in the Sierra Foothills in Placer, Amador and El Dorado counties.

Pamper

Every bachelorette weekend needs a little pampering. Try a two-hour pamper party at BioSpirit Day Spa, where you can combine treatments like a massage and facial or an exfoliating scrub and hydrating wrap. While you’re at it, enjoy a glass of champagne in the steam room.

After an evening of drinking, you are likely in need of a little rehydrating. Enter H2uP, a concierge IV hydration service that will come to your hotel room and refuel you and your bridesmaids with fluids and other ingredients to target symptoms like nausea or headaches. Just sit back and relax (while watching something fitting on Netflix like “Bridesmaids”) as a trained nurse administers your treatment. The treatment last under an hour, and leaves you feeling refreshed and ready to take on the day. For an extra boost of energy, try a B12 shot.

No trip to Lake Tahoe would be complete without some time spent enjoying nature. For an all-skills-level hike, head to Van Sickle Bi-State Park, which is located conveniently behind Heavenly Village. Due to a steep incline, within 15 minutes you are above the tree line taking in epic views of the lake.

Enjoy a day out on the water (while also strengthening your core) on a standup paddleboard. South Tahoe Standup Paddle and SUP Tahoe both offer rentals, life jackets and tips for beginners.

Get a bird’s eye view of Lake Tahoe while you parasail across the waters with Zephyr Cove Resort. Either solo or tandem, experience the area while tethered to boat with a 1,000-foot rope.

Congeners and the brewing of a hangover

The effects of congeners in alcohol
The Day After - Edvard Munch. Photo credit: Wikipedia Commons

What causes hangover symptoms?  One of the culprits is congeners. I know catchy, right? Congeners are substances produced during fermentation other than alcohol. Eww, gross. Except congeners are the substances responsible for most of the taste and aroma of the alcohol, so we kind of like them. But, and there’s always a but, studies have shown that alcohols with increased levels of congeners are associated with worse hangovers. Bourbon? High congener content. While vodka has the lowest. High quality vodka has even less. Try drinking Tahoe Blue Vodka, (Yeah, we like them) in moderation and you have your best shot at being hangover free.

Taking the sting out of hangovers is a “prickly” business

Cinco de Mayo has arrived! Despite one’s best intentions to drink in moderation and hydrate appropriately, some events and celebrations are just conducive to having one too many. Did you know that a cactus might help decrease that dreaded morning after malaise called the hangover?

A long time staple in Mexico for food and medicinal purposes, the prickly pear cactus is pricking the interest of researchers. In a small double-blind, placebo-controlled crossover study, Tulane University Health Science Center researchers found that taking a 1600U oral dose of prickly pear cactus (Opuntia ficus indica, nopal) 5 hours before drinking can significantly reduce hangover severity. Specific symptoms such as dry mouth and nausea were reduced, as well as serum C- reactive protein. Researchers believe that hangover symptoms are due to the activation of inflammation. Use of prickly pear extract is thought to decrease production of those inflammatory mediators*.

You can find supplements with prickly pear at Grass Roots in South Lake Tahoe.
